What does CNC mean?

CNC is the acronym for Computer Numerical Control. It refers to the automated control of the operation of machine tools (drills, lathes, boring tools, etc.) by a computer. A CNC machine tool converts a raw piece of material (metal, plastic, wood, ceramic or composite material) and makes it meet precise specifications without manual operations.

Who are CNCs aimed at?

CNCs are aimed at everyone who wants to precisely machine and shape the material of their choice. From a hobbyist, to a professional, to small or large craft workshops and industries. It is aimed at everyone who wants to create a prototype item, a copy, or those who want to automate their production. Ask us so that we can find the best CNC solution for you together.

Which size is ideal for my CNC?

This is one of the biggest questions when purchasing a CNC. The answer depends on the work you will be doing now, as well as in the near future. If the purpose is to process small samples, prototyping, models or hobby projects, then a small-sized CNC seems ideal. Buy the CNC that you judge you will need in the near future โ€” it is the most economical solution.

Should I choose a Router or a Spindle for my CNC?

Router and spindle are two different tools. The router is used for shaping materials such as wood and plastic, is usually portable, air-cooled, and its power ranges from 800W to 1kW. The spindle is ideal for CNC applications, can machine various materials with high cutting quality, is driven by an inverter and allows speed adjustment with great precision. Both tools are excellent choices when specified correctly.

What do we call “BOB”?

BOB is the acronym for Breakout Board. It refers to the board that interconnects a computer system with the various relays, motor controllers and peripherals, in order to respond effectively to the functions of a CNC machine tool. Its basic function is to receive information via a group of cables (parallel port or ribbon cable) and split it into individual terminal pins.

What do we call a “Motion Controller Board”?

Motion controller boards belong to the broad category of Breakout Boards. The main difference is that they receive information from a computer system via USB or an IP communication protocol. The information they receive is processed, analysed and redistributed to the individual terminal pins, free of parasitic signals. This way, the limit switches, relays, motor controllers and other peripherals respond more effectively.

What is a stepper motor?

Stepper motors are brushless DC motors, and their operation is based on electromagnetism. The rotor is surrounded by a toothed magnet of positive and negative polarity. According to the voltages applied to the stator coils, magnetism is created that causes a rotational displacement of the rotor โ€” this displacement is called a step. The most common is the 1.8ยฐ step, which completes one full rotation in 200 steps.

Where can I learn more about Mach3 Software?

The best place is the company’s own website (Mach support website). On the Product Manuals page there are useful manuals such as: Mach3 Installation and Configuration Guide, Usage Guide for Mach3 Mill/Plasma, Usage Guide for Mach3 Turn, Rich’s Guide to Mach3 Threading, Mach3 CV Notes, Mach3 Macro Programmers Reference and Mach3 VBScript Command Reference. There are also Videos and tutorials, as well as a support forum.

The role of coolant in CNC machining

During CNC machining, we use coolant for three reasons: 1) Lubrication โ€” materials such as aluminium and steel contain sticky impurities that tend to stick to the cutting tools. Lubrication prevents this. 2) Cooling โ€” the materials and the cutting tools have a close chemical affinity and tend to stick together when heated. Cooling prevents deformation of the workpiece. 3) Chip removal โ€” the material removed must be cleared from the cutting area so that it does not damage the cutting tool.
