3-Flute Aluminium End Mills for CNC Router Milling
15,50 € – 32,00 €Price range: 15,50 € through 32,00 € (inc VAT)
Three-edged milling cutters for aluminium on CNC routers, available in 4mm, 6mm and 8mm. The three flutes clear chips faster than a two-flute tool, so the feed rate can rise without loading the edge. Suited to extrusion, plate and sheet rather than wood or plastic.
The 3-flute aluminium end mill is a three-edged milling cutter built for machining aluminium on a CNC router. It is aimed at fabricators and workshops that cut extruded profiles, plate and sheet, and need an edge that leaves the machine clean rather than ragged.
Three cutting edges remove more material per revolution than a two-flute tool without giving up surface finish. The range covers 4mm, 6mm and 8mm diameters, so one family of cutters handles detail work and heavier slotting on the same machine.
Features
The flute geometry stops swarf from welding onto the cutting edge, the usual failure mode when a tool meant for timber is pushed into aluminium. Three channels clear chips faster than a two-flute tool, which lets you raise the feed rate without packing the slot.
Diameter decides how the cutter behaves in the cut. The 4mm size suits lettering, thin webs and small internal radii; 6mm is the general-purpose diameter for most plate work; 8mm takes deeper passes and deflects less in long slots. Each 3-flute aluminium end mill in the range is sold as a single cutter.
- Three cutting edges for higher feed rates at the same spindle speed
- Flute form that resists chip welding and built-up edge in aluminium
- Solid carbide, HRC45, uncoated โ the right grade for aluminium at router speeds
- Three diameters available: 4mm, 6mm and 8mm
- Faster chip evacuation than a comparable two-flute cutter
- Clean, burr-free edges on profiles, plate and sheet
- Sized for CNC router spindles rather than heavy mills
Where a 3-flute aluminium end mill is used
Typical work is aluminium extrusion for machine frames, 6000-series plate for brackets and face plates, and sheet for panels and covers. On a router the cutter handles slots, pockets, outside profiling and hole enlargement in material a few millimetres to a couple of centimetres thick, taken in several passes.
It also covers one-off repair parts: spacers, mounting plates, adapter flanges. If you need other tooling for the same machine, the rest of the cutter and spindle range is in our online shop, including collets and holders for router spindles.
What to check before buying
Check the shank diameter against your collet before ordering. A 4mm cutter needs a collet that closes on its shank, and many router spindles ship with only one or two collet sizes. Check the usable cutting length too: a long slot in 10mm plate needs more flute length than an engraving pass.
The common mistake is buying the largest diameter available. An 8mm cutter asks for a rigid gantry and a spindle that can hold the feed rate; on a light machine it chatters where a 6mm cutter would cut quietly. The second mistake is using a 3-flute aluminium end mill in wood or MDF, which dulls the edge quickly for no gain.
Installation and maintenance
Clean the collet and the taper before fitting, and clamp the shank deep in the collet while keeping the cutter short out of the holder. Excess overhang is the main cause of chatter and broken 4mm cutters. Set speeds and feeds for aluminium rather than wood; standard speeds and feeds guidance explains how chip load relates to diameter and flute count.
Aluminium cuts better with lubrication. A mist of cutting fluid or even a brush of paraffin keeps swarf from sticking, and compressed air alone clears chips but leaves the edge hotter. Brush the flutes clean after each job, store each 3-flute aluminium end mill so the edges cannot knock together, and inspect the corners under light โ a rounded corner shows before the finish does.
FAQ
Which diameter should I start with? 6mm covers most plate and profile work; add 4mm for detail and 8mm for deep slots.
Can a 3-flute aluminium end mill cut brass or plastic? Brass works with care; soft plastics tend to melt and smear, so a single-flute cutter is better.
Do I need coolant? Not strictly, but some lubrication and air extend tool life noticeably and keep the finish bright.
